Attendance

Students who are 18 years of age or older are NOT allowed to call themselves in for attendance or early release.

• First unexcused absence: Teacher will talk to the student; automated phone call goes home.
• Second unexcused absence: Teacher will call home and talk with parents/guardians. 
• Third unexcused absence: Automated three-day letter will be sent to parents/guardians.
• Fourth unexcused absence: Teacher alerts administration; administration will meet with the student, put them on an attendance contract, and call parents/guardians.
• Fifth unexcused absence: Administration fails the student and calls the parents/guardians. The student will remain in class with the opportunity to earn credit back.
• Sixth unexcused absence: School social worker sends referral form to Hennepin County school truancy intervention program.
• Additional days of unexcused absences: School social worker files an Educational Neglect/Truancy Report with the Hennepin County Attorney's Office.

It is imperative for scholars to be on time to their classes. Tardiness negatively impacts a scholar’s academic performance and disrupts teaching and learning. All scholars must have a hallway pass during class time when they are not in the classroom. There are no passes given during the first and last 10 minutes of each block.

 If a scholar is absent from class 50% or more, they will be marked absent for that block. Three unexcused absences will result in a school detention.

Students checking in late or leaving early during the school day must sign in or sign out at the Greeter’s Desk. Scholars may not dismiss themselves from school for any reason. When ill, scholars should report to the nurse's office and must be signed out through that office.

Family-related absences must be verified by a phone call or note from a parent/guardian within two school days of the occurrence of the absence. These include the following: personal illness, family emergency or death in the family, medical/dental appointments, pre-arranged college visits, pre-arranged family business or vacation, major religious holidays, legal matters, and court appearances.

After an excused absence, the student assumes responsibility for obtaining assignments and completing make-up work within the time specified by the teacher. Parents/guardians and students should make every effort to schedule appointments outside the school day. Each day of absence in the four-block schedule represents a significant loss of instructional time.

Parents/guardians must call the Attendance Office at 952-988-4530 to report a student's absence. Please do NOT call the main office number to report an absence.

• When a student has been excused for eight days during the school year,  administration will send an eight-day letter to parents/guardians regarding the absence.
• Administration may require parents/guardians to send a note excusing additional absences from school.
• Administration may require a doctor's note to excuse additional days missed from school.

The school authorizes students to miss regular classes in order to participate in alternative activities which include the following: approved field trips, interscholastic athletic competitions and events, student recognition, and award ceremonies.

• Monitor your student's attendance on the Parent Portal. An access code is required.
